Understanding the initial idea of how a final concept is conceived is not one that can be explained clearly let alone easily. There may very well be a premise in the workings of the idea constantly refined until the magic finally comes together with a good and sound working message. The little league baseball team Kentucky Sting originally had no idea of what they wanted as a mascot to represent their team but they did want something that was brave and stunning. The idea evolved from a range of image elements that were related to the simple idea of power and intimidation to represent the team.
After a few meetings we arrived at the conclusion that a scorpion would be a great icon to identify with as the insect itself is a natural predator. Using black with a warm yellow easily represents the heat Kentucky Sting’s team united ignites on the playing field. We typically play with a range of metaphors that best support the tone of the design before going on to other stages of our process. This allows for freedom in other areas of design once we feel confident that a good idea will only become stronger emerging the uniqueness of the brand.
